Remarks
Yancey County was founded by English, Irish and Scottish settlers in 1833. They were mostly agricultural farmers and Burley Tobacco was their main crop. For this they needed farmland and as they came through Paint Fork Gap, they found plenty of it along the Prices Creek River Valley. One stop on their journey was an artesian spring where they stopped for a refreshing drink. That spring house is still in existence today, supplying water for those who wish a drink. Sitting sentinel over this spring is a historic home that was built in 1890 to farm the surrounding land.

In its 128 year history, the farmhouse on Hortons Creek Road has seen many families come and go. Some were farmers, some well to do business men. More recently it was shared with travelers as a Vacation Rental. Regardless of who owned this home, it was well cared for, well-loved and is a shining example of 19th Century American Architecture. The heart pine floors and fireplace hearths remind you of an earlier time. Details such as the engraved brass door knobs and hinges have been lovingly preserved. Period light fixtures have been restored or added to maintain the character of the home. A Heartland Stove graces the spacious kitchen. The stained glass panel in the half bath has been dated back to the same age as the house and could very well be original to the home.

With this home, old does meet new. All windows have been updated with energy efficient double pain, tilt out windows. Two heat pumps were added for zoned heating and cooling with the original boiler system still in use for cold winter days. The homes electric system is updated and a new metal roof was installed with a 50 year warranty. Propane was brought in for the dining room fireplace, patio grill and garage heat. Granite counter tops were added as well as tile in the bathrooms and showers.  Somewhere along the way an RV pad and a 3 bay garage was added with an open loft that could be converted to an apartment.

This is one of the best kept homes of its era that I have had the pleasure to visit. I envy the person who will call it home. I can picture summer evenings on the front porch, watching the dogs romp in the front garden while the horses graze in the pasture across the road. Maybe a friend is flyfishing in the trout stream, attempting to catch that nights dinner. The smaller stream to the side of the property is gurgling and adding to the peaceful sound of the crickets in the yard. All of this while sipping your tea, taking in the beauty of the surrounding mountains and enjoying the peaceful splendor of the valley. What a place to call home. What a place to visit if you want a B&B! What a place to call YOURS!

About Susan

I am a 15+ year veteran of real estate in the Asheville market. My husband and I have made our home in the peaceful mountains of Western North Carolina since 1992 where we worked together in the running of our home remodeling business. Together we have built 4 homes and renovated another as well as renovated countless homes for clients. I have always taken an active part in the design and building of these homes. From hanging ridge rafters to laying hardwood floors, I have gained a great deal of respect and understanding of what goes into a well-built home. This love of homes and home construction is what led me to become a Real Estate Broker in 2003 and later a General Contractor. I am also active in canine sports, competing with my golden retrievers and organizing obedience trials as well as serving on the board (current President) of the Sandlapper Golden Retriever Club.  In addition, I am a stained glass artist and I take much pride and satisfaction in designing and creating glass art that I often donate to benefit rescues and canine health research.

Since starting my Real Estate Career long ago, I have won many sales awards and more importantly to me, several Quality Service Awards. For several years I was Broker in Charge of a small office, managing 9 other agents. Feeling the need to get back to what I love about real estate, I am now concentrating on my
clients and their needs as a Broker Associate. I chose to work with Town & Mountain Realty because of their history in this community and their stellar reputation in the Asheville and surrounding markets. I specialize in Residential Homes, Small Farms and Land Tracks that fit the needs of individuals and families with dogs and other companion animals. My time spent training and competing with my own dogs has given me an understanding that often a fenced yard for Puppy is not enough. Sometimes we need a bit more. For both sellers and buyers I recognize the unique needs that our companion animals bring to
the equation.
